Freebies at Walt Disney World - Part 1?

I put Part 1? because I think I'll need to break this up into smaller parts or you'd be reading here until the cows come home.

That being said...Freebie?  Did you say Freebie?  At Walt Disney World?  Are you sure?

You hear this kind of stuff from people who have the impression that a Walt Disney World vacation costs you an arm and a leg.

There are little bits of magic that you can experience for free on Walt Disney World property.  Here's the first installation:

~ At nearly every counter service location at Walt Disney World, you can get a free plastic cup of ice water.

~ If you get a headache and need a Tylenol or aspirin, head to one of the First Aid stations to get one for free rather than spend $10 on a bottle in the parks.

~Stickers!  A lot of CMs are out and about giving stickers out to kids and kids-at-heart.

~Pin Trading - While you need to bring your own pins, participating in pin trading with CMs is free.

~Club Cool in Epcot - you can sample different varieties of Coca-Cola from around the world for free.

~Kidcot Funstops in Epcot - make a mask and decorate it for free.

~After you get off the vehicle on Spaceship Earth in Epcot you can send free email postcards

This is just a sampling of some of the free stuff that is available around the world!  Watch for future editions!

Do you have a favorite freebie that you have taken part in on a Walt Disney World vacation?  Please post your comment or email me!  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    Photopass CD Pre-Order is Back!

Have you seen those photographers at the parks, offering to take your photo?  Those people are Photopass Photographers!

Have you ever taken them up on it?  Did you know that it's FREE to have your photos taken and it's FREE to view them online?

Photopass services also include ordering prints, photo albums, and even your pictures on CD.   But when you order those after your trip, it can be pretty spendy.

Disney is once again making it easy for you to pre-order a Photopass CD at the discounted rate of $99.95.

Now you may think that's a lot of money, but you can get all of your Photopass pictures on CD for that price.  You also get the copyright to those pictures so you can reproduce them wherever and however you like.

I've heard of many people who have had hundreds of pictures taken and gotten them on the CD.

One of the other benefits to Photopass is the photographers do have some magic up their sleeves.  In certain settings, there are special effects that can be added to your picture.   That's not something you can do from home.  However, there are some labels and borders that can be added to pictures after the fact.

Here's one of the Photopass pictures I have.  It's from the old Pirate & Princess Party that had a short run at Magic Kingdom a few years back.

Aren't they the cutest you've ever seen!  ;-)

    Here's how it works:
Go to the Photopass website and pre-order the CD.
Go on vacation and get those photos taken.   You'll be given a Photopass card with a number on it. Each time you take a picture, you give that card to the Photopass photographer.  They take the picture and store it on your card.
Come home and add your pictures to your pre-ordered CD.  You go back the Photopass website and enter the number on your Photopass card. You can then add the pictures to your order, and you can even add some of those labels and borders that I mentioned.

Disney gets your CD made and mails it off to you.  It usually takes a couple weeks.

So, are you excited by the return of this offer?  Have questions on Photopass?

Please feel free to post your comment or question!  I look forward to your discussion.

It's Party Time! MNSSHP & MVMCP at Magic Kingdom!

Some of the most anticipated events of the year for Disney Fans are the special parties that happen at Magic Kingdom around certain holidays.

MNSSHP = Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party

I'll blog on this specific event later, but for now, it appears that the first MNSSHP is scheduled for September 14 and will happen on certain nights through Halloween.  If you love Halloween and the festivities of fall, you may need to check this out!

    AND

MVMCP = Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party

What can I say;  if you love Christmas, this might appeal to you!  The first MVMCP is scheduled for November 12 and happens on select dates until December 17.

Disney will be releasing the full schedule later this month.  Tickets typically go on sale around May 1.

If you think you might want to attend, get your tickets in advance.  Some dates will sell out and you get a small price break purchasing in advance.

Look for another pop-in post on each of these parties in the near future!

Transportation: How the heck should I get to Disney World?

So you've decided to go to Walt Disney World.  Great!

Now...How are you going to get there?

    You have a few options:

    1. Air
If you are like me, and you just don't live close enough to make driving reasonable and you don't have rail options, flying is usually the most convenient and time-efficient.

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the closest major airport to Walt Disney World. It's served by all major airlines and even some you may not have heard of.

What's cool about flying into MCO is that if you are staying at a Disney Resort, you can take the complimentary Magical Express to your resort from the airport.  No schlepping into a taxi.  No need to rent a car unless, you are like me where I need to be in control of my transportation!

    2. Rail.
Did you know there is an Autotrain that runs down the Amtrak lines down the East Coast?  You can hop on near Washington DC, have your car or motorcycle loaded up with you and ride the train down to Florida!

The cool part is meals are included with your Autotrain ticket.  A big plus to air travel where you don't get a meal unless you are flying first class, and only then if flying over a mealtime.

It does take longer than a flight ~ a little more than 17 hours.  But you have the benefit of having your own car with you and you don't have the hassles of an airport.

The Autotrain stops in Sanford, FL, which is about an hour out of Orlando.

    3. Drive.

I envy those of you who can reasonably drive to Walt Disney World.  In Minnesota, it's a little over 24 hours of driving time.  Unless I want to look like death warmed over, I need to take at least two days to get there.  Three days is better so I have a little energy for my vacation.  But then I'm looking at an extra four to six days just going to and from my vacation destination.

Unless you are retired or have a very flexible schedule, that's just a little unrealistic in terms of using vacation days wisely.

I'm tempted to commando drive sometimes when I see airfare priced as high as it is. But at the same time, you have to value your time.

    What is your preference?

We'll touch on transportation within Walt Disney World in a future post.

    Enjoy!

Captain Hook is trying to take over Magic Kingdom!

    Got your attention, didn't I?

Well, there are few things with that Captain Hook that you may want to be aware of when it comes to Magic Kingdom.

If you are a frequent visitor to MK, as it's referred to by the Disney veterans, you may want to consider taking the Family Magic Tour.

It takes place daily at 10am at MK and is for all ages.  You start out on a tour that quickly turns into an adventure.  Mickey recruits you for a "secret mission" ~  Captain Hook is trying to take over the Magic Kingdom!  If he succeeds, only pirates can ride the rides!  Peter Pan apparently took Captain Hook's hook and your job is to get it back!

This tour is $27 per person, adults and children. If you're looking for something fun and new to do at MK, this could be it!

And if you are visiting MK this summer, be sure to take in the Summer Nightastic at Magic Kingdom!
The Main Street Electrical Parade returns to MK for the summer!

More importantly, and more relevant to this post, is that rumor has it that the Summer Nightastic Fireworks Show at MK will be Music, Magic & Mayhem ~ the fireworks show from the old Pirate & Princess Parties.

If that is the case (as all indications are pointing to), then you'll hear and see a fabulous story, and at a point you may think that Captain Hook is firing fireworks directly at Cinderella's Castle!

It's the best fireworks show I've ever seen and I so hope it's back for the summer!

We'll it's time to pop out again...as my friend Tigger would say...TTFN - Ta Ta For Now!

    Disney World Countdown

Well, I'm popping in to report that my O.D.D got the better of me this past week.

Even though my next trip to Disney World is not until June, I couldn't hold off.  I had to make a chain.

You know, one of those paper chains we made as kids, usually to count down how many days were left in the school year before summer vacation?

Seriously...my chain might be that long.  Okay...maybe not.  I usually make a chain around 45 days out.  That's about how long it can be when tacked to the top of my corkboard in my kitchen and not hang on the floor.

Well, my chain had to be tacked up twice to not be on the floor.  I think my loops were a little large this time around.

Not the paper chain making type?

Did you know there are some digital countdown timers you can get with Mickey or Disney themes on them?

These are kind of fun is you are regular poster on bulletin boards online and such.

Mickeypath.com is a pretty popular one in terms of having a lot of different options.  Some include even adding your countdown to email and Facebook.

Here's a sample of what it looks like:

Not going to Disney right away?  Use this counter for any other special occasion you have coming up!

Check it out and count down!

Walt Disney World Park Hours: Great way for a Quick Reference Guide!

If you read my bio, you know I have self-diagnosed O.D.D ~ Obsessive Disney Disorder.  (I so need to trademark that...)

There are groups of Disney fans who like to schedule and keep track of what hours are when.

Well, heck, if you are going to Disney World, you kinda need to know when the park opens and closes, when special events are, when Extra Magic Hours are and so on.

So, how to get that in an easy, portable, Quick Reference Guide that you can carry with you or insert in your Passporter or other favorite guidebook?

    I recently discovered WDWParkHours.com.

    What a wicked cool website!

This website is currently in beta, but I LOVE what they are doing right now!

You can create your own schedule of park hours and events.  Plug in your dates, decide if you want events and EMH to show up AND decide what format you want it to appear as.  You can choose Box, Calendar or List.

Box is totally cool and I think printed out and cropped, the best portable way to take the hours with you.

Calendar is organized like a wall calendar.

List...well, it's a list.  And it's pretty long.  But I bet it's probably easiest for someone to cut and paste into Word and manipulate if you are making something crazy customized.

They are also working on something to do with Wait Times at the parks.  Take a picture with your camera or phone and email it to them.

Going to the parks and want to help out?  Just head over to wdwparkhours.com and check them out!

So far, I love what these guys are doing and can't wait to see how it all continues to develop!

If you love what you are getting from this blog so far, please share with your friends and use the re-tweet button in the sidebar!

    Thanks!

When should I go to Disney World?

I guarantee you that everyone asks themselves that question.  And we could sit here and talk all the live-long day about it.

There are many opinions out there.  I'll share mine with you, but I'll also share some things to think about with regard to you and your vacation.

    Is cost a significant factor?

Well, who doesn't want to save a few bucks?  Disney is just like any other travel mecca;  There are times when it's busier than others and they charge extra at their resorts, and sometimes have surcharges at some restaurants, for those busier times.  The law of supply and demand in action.

Each Disney theme park area has its own seasons.  Busy times for Disney World don't necessarily line up with busy times at Disneyland in California.

For this post, I'm going to stick with Disney World.  (But if you have questions about Disneyland or other Disney areas, please feel free to post a comment.)

There are four main seasons: Value, Regular, Peak and Holiday.

Value Season is the least expensive, but it's also times that are probably least convenient for people to travel. In general, Value season typically covers January, the first part of February, September and the first two weeks of December.

Regular Season is generally late April through mid-August, October and most of November.

Peak Season usually runs from President's Week in mid-February through mid-April.  It basically covers when most of the Spring Break times would be in the United States.

Holiday Season is the most expensive time to stay at Disney resort hotel.  This includes the week before and the week after Easter, and Christmas week.

Keep in mind, I'm speaking in generalities here.  For the most current rack rates that Disney is offering, it's best to visit http://www.disneyworld.com.

Do you need to worry about school?

If you have school-age children, odds are it's something you have to take into consideration.  Some districts like to play with a heavier hand than others with regard to family vacations.  Others see the value in family time.

    What about weather?

Summer is brutal in Florida.  There's no easy way to say it. It's hot and it's humid.   Assess for yourself if you can really have an enjoyable vacation if you travel in the summer.

August and September are peak months for hurricane season.  And there are always good deals from about August 15 through the end of September.  Can you live with the possibility of having a hurricane come through during your stay?  Disney is the place to ride one out.   But essentially, do you want to take the roll of the dice for a good deal?  Many people do.

Basically, it comes down to, how prepared are you willing to be?  If you can plan ahead and be prepared, any time of year is do-able at Disney World.

I'd start with those three items and try to narrow down from there.

Now, I promised I'd tell you my favorite times to go to Disney World:

    1. Early December.
    2. October/November.
    3. Spring

Why these times?  Well...I'm saving that for some future posts!

Have questions on when to plan your trip, or what's going on right now?  Please post a comment and let's have a chat!

    Pop-in #1: Disney World 101

This is Mary, popping in with some Walt Disney World 101 tips and facts.

Fact:  Walt Disney World covers more than 40 square miles and includes four theme parks, two water parks, two mini golf courses, its own shopping and entertainment district and more.

It's true!  The land encompassing Walt Disney World is larger than the island of Manhattan.  So you can imagine being able to truly "do everything" is a bit on the improbable side.  I've been to WDW almost 20 times and there are things that I can identify that we have not done yet.

I'll have future posts talking about making a game plan to touring the parks and the stuff beyond the parks, too.

Fact:  WDW has a lot of onsite resort hotels.

There are nearly 20 Disney resorts.  There are also a couple of non-Disney branded resorts that happen to be on Disney property. I'll be doing some resort reviews as well.   There are plenty of "off-site" resorts and hotels within close proximity to WDW, too.  Look for comments and reviews on those in coming posts.

Fact:  WDW has over one hundred restaurants.

All the theme parks, waterparks, resorts and Downtown Disney have places to eat.  It's just a matter of deciding what you want to eat and when.  I'll have a dining planning primer a little bit later.

Fact: WDW has special events throughout the year.

This place is not just a mecca for thrill rides and attractions.  There are special events that make going to WDW even more exciting than usual. I'll have a quick reference guide post for that coming up as well.

    Fact:  Disney Characters are everywhere!

You just have to know where to find them.  But if your little princess is dying to meet her favorite princess, there are multiple locations throughout WDW where you can not only find them for a meet & greet, but you can even dine with some of them as well.  And don't worry, if you have a boy like I do, there's plenty of characters for them as well.

Fact:  It's easy to travel to WDW.

I think it is and I live in the middle of the country!  Whether you drive or fly, there are ways to make it affordable and reasonable for your budget.  I'll have future posts on transportation options, including rental cars and Magical Express, and other information.

Fact:  WDW has A LOT of ticket options.

Don't feel overwhelmed by all the options that the Magic Your Way ticket provides.  It's truly a great system for you to get only what you want and only what you need. And I LOVE that the more days you add to your ticket, the less it costs you per day to visit the parks.  Truly genius on Disney's part.  I'll have a ticket rundown in later posts as well.

Fact:  Mary has lots of WDW trivia and fluff.

Total fact.  If they ever had a Jeopardy show just with Disney categories, I should so be on it.   I have more than one friend who refers to me as "The Queen of All Things Disney", entirely unprompted.  While that title may be used by others as well, I know that I am excited to share my passion with all of you.

My plan is to have posts not only in the categories I've discussed above, but on other aspects of the Disney world as they occur to me and as you ask questions.

Thanks so much for following me on this journey!

    Welcome!

Welcome to Mary's Pop-ins:  The Skinny on Minnie...and Mickey, too!

A big thanks to my friend Renee from Facebook who came up with this blog title!

I've had a few people tell me I needed to start my own blog about Disney because...well, I know a lot.  And I make an effort to stay on top of the news.  There are so many resources out there that sometimes it can be overwhelming deciding what to read and where to read it.

My goal is to work on becoming your one stop shop for information.  Whether it's direct information from me, or that I can get you directly to the information you are looking for.

You may be asking yourself, "Well, why would I listen to this gal? What does she really know?"

    Here's a snapshot:
    • 16+ trips to Disney World and counting
    • Have traveled with toddlers, teens, adults and seniors
    • Have traveled in a large party and have planned a Grand Gathering at Disney World
    • Regularly travel with a Type I diabetic
    • Owner, Disney Vacation Club
    • Member, Disney Dream Depot.  We also have our own web chat show called Disney Dream Depot Live every Thursday evening at 8pm Central.
    • Member, Passporter Street Team.  If you don't have a Passporter Guidebook, you need one.
I'm very excited to start my blog on happenings around the Disney world.

Gentle reader, I'm happy to have you here!  Please share with your friends!

    Mary
